I wanted to hide our trash cans along the narrow side of our home. Rather than a fence I tried my hand at making a green wall from recycled pallets.
I used new landscape timbers set in concrete as posts. Then framed the top and bottom with new 2×4 and 2×6 lumber.
Better systems use integrated irrigation by I like to hand water everything. So once a week I take out the garbage and water the wall.
There are better looking pallets but I wanted to use run-of-the-mill used pallets.
After. Just add water.
1 1/2 years later.
To preserve and give consistency I stained the face with Olympic oil based stain “Avocado”.
To create a planting chamber I lined each side with spun landscape fabric. The woven type works fine too but this one cuts much easier.
The 3′ width dropped to the bottom and folded over to hold the soil.
This was the most tedious part of construction: cutting, spreading, and stapling.
I poured in Fafard #4 mix. It is light weight, sterile, and holds enough water for this shallow but tall column.
Then slice through with a box cutter to make openings to plant.
Bromeliad pups like this ‘MoPeppaPlease’ easily poked into X cuts in the fabric.
Nice, overgrown birds nest Sansevieria fit right between the boards.
After planting I gently watered to settle it all in. I postponed planting anything in the top for a couple of months to allow for settling. Then added more Asian jasmine and bromeliads.
