Rusty Bell was quite the plantsman. When I first met him, he just started working at Sundance Orchids but he admitted that he knew mostly about trees. He spend several years working for Davey Tree and he had broad knowledge of plant science, fertilizer, insects, propagation and so much more. So it was a short time of concentrated work in the bromeliad houses until he became an expert in the field. Rusty never used his intelligence as a source of pride or a stumbling block to learning more. Instead he liked asking questions and giving helpful service.
Earlier this year I wondered why I saw him less at the nursery and assumed he was spending more time on Pine Island at his tropical garden home (The Tangle), as well as making instructional videos about bromeliads. But then I heard of his diagnosis of a brain tumor with little time left.
I visited him in the hospital the day before he died. He was sitting up in bed, recognized me, gave me a firm handshake and we talked for about 15 minutes. I gave him a little bible and told him there is a group of people praying for him as we speak. He said “Thanks Bob.” I mourn his loss.
To honor Rusty, I made this mosaic plaque to be displayed at his memorial service at Sundance Orchids. The base is 3/4″ curly red oak, treated with Danish oil to bring out the grain. The mosaic is made from stained glass adhered to Kerdiboard, the stuff they use as tile base in showers and kitchens. Click on each photo for details of its construction.
